Artist Aria McManus talks about her Anna Wintour Wig purse (among other things) and invites you to bring combustible and non-toxic items to her and Raine Trainor’s show HEAT EXCHANGE, happening at MUDDGUTS gallery this Saturday, March 22nd.

SHK has teamed up with photographer Kelsey Bennett in this ongoing portrait series, featured in SHK Mag with continuous profiles here on the blog, capturing the most creative influencers roaming NYC this year.

Originally from Minnesota. Aira describes herself as a humorous inventor. Her art is concerned with objects that have more than one function. She recently made a teddy bear out of bubble wrap.

“Here’s a good thing to do if you go to a party and you don’t know anybody: first take out the garbage. Then go around and collect any extra garbage that people might have, like a crumpled napkin, and take that out too. Pretty soon people will want to meet the busy garbage guy.” — Jack Handey

IN MANY WAYS, YOUR PIECES FUNCTION TO SATISFY A HUMAN NEED… JUST WITH A LARGER DOSE OF STYLE THAN IN MOST CASES. FOR THIS REASON I WOULD NOT ONLY CONSIDER YOU AN ARTIST, BUT ALSO, A VISIONARY AND AN INVENTOR. WOULD YOU SAY THE SAME?

I’ve always found that “inventing” is the thing that comes easiest to me, whether I want it or not, it’s what gets me excited about a project.

ON MARCH 22ND, YOU’RE HAVING A ONE NIGHT ONLY POP-UP STORE KNOWN AS HEAT EXCHANGE…

note: HEAT EXCHANGE will feature “heat related” items that ALL VISITORS will be encouraged to obtain through trade. In order to trade for an item we ask that all items brought be combustible and non-toxic. Once all the items are traded there will be a trash fire where all traded items will be burned. The ashes of the fire will then be sold, with all proceeds donated to the Bowery Mission.

… WHICH WILL HAVE ITEMS AVAILABLE FOR BARTERING/TRADING. WHAT’S THE IDEA AROUND THE PERFORMANCE TRASH FIRE AT THE END OF THE NIGHT?

In order to trade an item, it has to be combustible and non-toxic, at the end of the night we burn all of the traded items, then sell the ashes for money. If the ashes are sold, we are donating proceeds to the Bowery Mission.

WHAT’S YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE BOWERY MISSION? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COLLABORATE WITH THEM ON THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT?

The show is about the absence of heat, and all different ways to create it or destroy it. We wanted to highlight an organization who are helping those without heat or homes.

IS IT CORRECT TO SAY THAT WITH HEAT EXCHANGE PEOPLE WILL BE EX-HANGING ITEMS THEY THINK NO LONGER FUFILL THEIR NEEDS FOR ITEMS THEY THINK WILL?

My guess is there might be a couple different approaches. Some people might bring pieces they’ve made just for the occasion, and some might bring items just to get rid of them and watch them burn.

I THINK IT’S AN INCREDIBLE IDEA. I’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED SPRING CLEANING TO BE SO CONCEPTUAL AND PHILANTHROPIC ALL AT ONCE. WHAT’S THE FIRST THING ON YOUR “ITEMS TO BURN” LIST?

I think I will just sit back and see what everyone else brings… I will be creating “heat objects” for people to trade their items, so I want to let the ashes just represent everyone that participated.

A FEW OF YOUR WORDS ON THE WIG PURSE…

NAME ONE PERSON IN NYC THAT YOU WOULD NOMINATE FOR H.A.G.S.?

Raine Trainor.

TELL US ONE THING WE SHOULD:

SEE:

Beyonce “Sex On Fire”

HEAR: Soundbourdt.

KNOW: Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Top 30 Most Shocking Secrets and Scandals.

“The acronym of Have A Good Summer, H.A.G.S — a sentiment scrawled across the pages of yearbooks — is the title of my ongoing series of portraits, resembling what the kids of my dream High School would look like. They’re the artists, musicians, writers, outcasts, rebels, or just members of a rad gang.”  — Kelsey Bennett
