Owls have a new record. It’s been over two decades since the band formed Cap’n Jazz as teens and 13 years since their debut self titled album. The songs featured in this latest album, Two, start with guitar riffs from Tim Kinsells, followed by builds leading up to chord and vocal melodies… Then the entire group joins in, hashing out each song with abundance (amid yelling and arguing, of course). In the first single “I’m Surprised” we’re met with a certain kind of naivety — in the best possibly way — when it comes to vocals. It’s a summer song that calls for lots of fun and drinking. Cheers! Here we talk to the band about this new record, life with a comeback and Nirvana cover bands. Oh, and if you are in Chi-Town, be sure to hit up their first show in 12 years.

SO YOU’RE BACK. BUT WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

You know when you do something during the day, and then another day comes and you don’t do what you did the previous day? That’s where Owls was. After the first record, the four of us got very busy figuring out how not to commit suicide before our respective moms passed away. The hiatus was a success! Cause here we are with another nice record of music and poetry.

WHAT PROMPTED THIS NEW ALBUM?

As men get older, the urge to procreate isn’t as strong, though the thought of doing-it remains.

WAS IT HARD TO GET “BACK IN THE GROOVE?”

Yes, very hard. There were times during band practice in which I had to physically restrain certain members of the band in order to prevent first-degree murder. Once we got past incendiary “creative differences,” everything became pure mojo, flow, emo, animal-planet, rescue babies first type-of-shit.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM OWLS NOW THAT YOU’RE BACK?

Expect more late night Internet-induced masturbation sessions accompanied with perhaps a show or TWO featuring Owls opening for a legit Nirvana cover-band (BTW the shitty Nirvana cover-bands should do us all a favor and stop being so terrible, please). Thanks for having us!
