Brooklyn Indie Pop band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are at SWSX and just announced their third LP Days of Abandon. Recorded in a Greenpoint Brooklyn studio, we talk to lead vocal/guitarist Kip Berman about beginnings, Glasgow bands, love and identity and more. (Listen to “Simple and Sure” from the album above and catch them in Texas at SXSW.)

YOUR BAND NAME SEEMS SUPER SYMBOLIC. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. HAS ANYONE GIVEN YOU A HARD TIME ABOUT THE LENGTH OF THE NAME?

KIP BERMAN: If you want to do anything good and true with your life, it’s never going to be easy. People are going to try to tear you down. I try my best not to do that with other bands, because I know how it feels to see a band you like say you’re awful in some interview. I think the best music criticism is music. If you don’t think something is good, go out and do something that is.

HOW DID THIS ALL START?

I just wrote some songs in my bedroom (well, sometimes the living room couch too), and asked my friends to come over and play them with me. We’ve had a few variations of people playing with us, but it’s always been people I respect and am friends with. So I think I”m pretty lucky.

YOU SAY ON YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE THAT YOUR INFLUENCES ARE “LIFE, DEATH AND THE PASTELS.” TELL US MORE.

[Laughs] I think that’s about right. I love The Pastels, they’re a Glaswegian Indie Pop band that has this really timeless quality to the songs they write. There are loads of other bands from Glasgow that they’re friends with that are excellent too — like Teenage Fanclub and The Vaselines.

The Pastels “Crawl Babies”

SONGS LIKE “YOUNG ADULT FICTION,” “A TEENAGER IN LOVE” AND “HEART IN YOUR HEARTBREAK” MAKE ME THINK OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL DAYS. WHAT”S THE DRAW TO THIS PARTICULAR POINT IN YOUR GUYS” LIVES? WHAT IS THE CONNECTION?

Those songs are mostly written about my life online casino after that period of adolescents. But I think the struggles of love and identity exist at any age. The word “teenager” doesn’t always mean someone who is between 12 and 20, but a sense of emotional absolutes and an idealism that I hope people maintain throughout their life.

SO YOU HAVE A NEW LP DAYS OF ABANDON COMING OUT! CONGRATS. TELL US MORE ABOUT IT, AND WHAT WAS GOING ON IN YOUR MIND AS YOU WERE WRITING. ALSO, WE LOVE THE ALBUM ART. IT”S VERY CLASSICAL IN CHARACTER WITH NAKED PEOPLE PLAYING INSTRUMENTS, BUT ALSO AWESOMELY EDGE-Y WITH NYLONS AND HALF-EMPTY EGG CARTONS.

I’m incredibly grateful that the artist, Lee Jinju, allowed us to use her work. Days of Abandon is probably our most sonically complete and lyrically candid record. (I hate when bands say how their new album is “the best one.”)… It’s not all just one mood, but captured a lot of the feelings I’ve gone through recently. We tried to build on the aspects of our first two records that we really liked and discard those elements that didn’t feel true to us.
