Portland-based artist Peter Gronquist is known for his ways of encompassing the ideas of the satirical and fantastical, which he deems as a reflection on an “hyper-American society.” With this series, as featured in the above image, Gronquist reconnoiters the concept of iconic branding with an often-unsettling usage of taxidermy (in the best possible way, of course). This series is a great investigation on this past, present and future on the ever-growing world of consumerism. So, we’ve the artist’s work as jumpstart for this weeks Trivia Thursday column. Although branding is often fun and creative, it’s important to remember how controversial the topic can become. Also, a can of Diet Coke will float in water while a can of regular Coke sinks — gross — and as bad of a rep as Americans have, it’s actually Iceland that consumes more Coca-Cola per capita than any other nation. Another fun soda fact, Pepsi once spent a ton of money on an advertising campaign in China with the slogan “Pepsi gives you life” – unfortunately, it was translated as “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave.” Opps. Talk about false advertising.
