We all know the feeling. An important deadline is just hours away, yet no matter how hard we try, we can’t stop thinking about other (usually pointless) shit. Wherever the hell your mind wanders, we know that having too much mental clutter can prevent us from focusing on the important tasks in the here and now. In these moments, an exercise in shrinkage can help to narrow your attention so you can quit spinning your wheels and actually get shit done.

Breathing is the first and most important step in shrinkage. It’s also probably the easiest— so simple, yet so effective. Concentrate on each breath as it comes into your body, and then as it leaves it. It has a calming effect, especially if you continue to return your focus to your breath when your mind strays.
