MICHAEL BIBLE: ARE YOU AN ARTIST YOURSELF?

JULIAN GILBERT: Yeah, I made a bunch of zines in the past year now. The first one I made was almost like a small book though. I was following my friend around for like eight or nine months. And then after that I went out the night of Hurricane Sandy. Two days later I brought my bike out to Rockaway and kinda’ made a zine on that — you know, while the hurricane was happening and the aftermath.

After that, I made a zine of people giving the middle finger on Christmas. My newest one was of portraits — it’s all portraits of people, just straight on portraits, like snap, that’s it. And then I made one on a band Cerebral Ballzy. I make a bunch of zines… I’m a photographer, but I do a lot of stuff. I work in an online store, I tour-manage a band and I take photos.

DID YOU GO TO HIGH SCHOOL HERE?

I went to high school and college here. I studied photography at the School of Visual Arts.

YOU LIVE IN BROOKLYN?

I live in the East Village. The apartment I live in now… It’s definitely been 18 years.

WOW, THAT’S GREAT. HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH ALL THE ZINE STUFF?

I designed the zine a while ago with this girl I was dating for a bit, probably two years ago we designed something together, but never made it. And then, I always just wanted to make something. She’d help me make it, but also show me how to make it personal, so after that I just had to figure it out for myself. And after making one I was like, “Why haven’t I been doing this forever?” I like creating things that have a theme, as opposed to just a bunch of random photos.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE ZINE FORMAT?

Zines are inexpensive to make and inexpensive to buy, and I only shoot film and get my stuff printed 4×6. It’s another way to promote yourself.

“The acronym of Have A Good Summer, H.A.G.S — a sentiment scrawled across the pages of yearbooks — is the title of my ongoing series of portraits, resembling what the kids of my dream High School would look like. They’re the artists, musicians, writers, outcasts, rebels, or just members of a rad gang.”  — Kelsey Bennett
