There’s a Chipotle guacamole crisis (How could they do that to us?) Well, here’s a couple ways to make up for it at home.

With its creamy smooth texture and notorious green vibrancy, guacamole is one recipe you’ll definitely want to have under your belt. It  is not only an essential for parties but with a little creative exploration, it can be used for so much more! Not to mention, avocados (guacamole’s main ingredient) is a great source of vitamins, potassium, and “healthy” fat. With only a couple of core ingredients and a few added spices, guacamole is fairly easy and quick to make. The guacamole made here is a bit on the mild side as it incorporates 5 different spices, however, feel free to adjust the quantity of the spices to suit your taste.


3 haas avocados

1/3 cup sour cream

1/2 lime

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

1/4 tsp ground cumin

1/2 tomato diced

1 red onion diced

salt to taste

Cut the three avocados in half and remove the pit. Scoop the avocado out of its shell and into a medium sized mixing bowl. Add in the 1/3 cup sour cream, this will give the guacamole an extra creamy texture. Using a pastry cutter or potato masher, begin to mash up the avocado. Continue to mash until you reach a desired consistency. I like to mash the avocados just enough so that the smooth creamy texture still has a few chunks of unmashed avocado in it.

Using a reamer, squeeze out the juice from 1/2 of a lime and add it to the avocado mixture. Add in the spices and fold into the avocado mixture using a rubber spatula. Dice up the tomato and onion and fold these in as well.

Add in salt to taste. If you feel it does not have enough heat or spice, you can also continue to add in more of the spices. Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy!

If you want to get creative with your guacamole try using it in new interesting ways. Guacamole goes great with Mexican cuisine and an easy way to serve it would be to deep from a few corn tortillas, top with black beans, guacamole, cotija cheese, and jalapenos. This dish could serve as a great snack or light lunch.

You can also spice up a traditional grilled cheese by pairing it with your favorite sliced cheese and letting the two come together between two slices of lightly charred toast.

If you want a lighter snack but want to stay away from using traditional chips, you can slice up small peppers and fill them with the guacamole. Once you clean out the seeds from the inside of the pepper, the hollow center is perfect for scooping in some guacamole. Keeping the peppers raw gives you the same crunch factor you look for in a chip but remains a healthier alternative.

For great pairings with guacamole, the possibilities are endless. Here is a list of ingredients that, according to the “Flavor Bible” by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg, go well with avocados: bacon, bell peppers, chicken, corn, fish, and mangoes. With this new found knowledge and step by step proceess of making guacamole, the only natural next step would be to get out some avocados and start smashing!
