Holes: Seeing life through kaleidoscope colored glasses.

Weekend two of Coachella just ended. So, if you’re anything like me, get ready for overwhelming amounts of Instagram FOMO. ;-( Chances are, if you are attending/browsing the festival style blogs, you’ll be seeing lots of dip-dyed locks, zany prints and hopefully a lack of fringe. Fuck that mess. But the real head-turner? h0Les eyewear. Fashion newflash: All the cool kids are rocking these killer specs. Also, Lady Gaga. When I tried on the goggles (for an Insta, obviously) at Art Basel, I felt like an entirely different person. My alter ego aka @acatinheat totally came out and howled at the moon/drank a lot. I felt like a million bucks or whatever. Good news is that quirky sunnies are wallet-friendly, unless you want/need every style, like I do. Anyway, I chatted with the designer behind the amazingness, the South Korean-born/“military brat” Pam Tietze about the next level brand’s backstory, her famous h0les’ fans (sup Dennis Rodman?), and what it’s like saving the sunnies universe. Read on, then open up a credit card or two.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE EARLY STAGES OF THE LINE.

I started experimenting with using crystals and prisms in old eyeglasses a few years ago. It’s only been about a year that I started taking it more seriously as a brand or business though.

HOW’D YOU COME UP WITH THE LINE’S NAME?

I mainly liked playing with the idea of discovering a portal or gateway and stumbling into something unknown. And it sounds kind of porn-y, which is ok with me.

WHY’D YOU START THE LINE? DO OTHER SUNNIES BORE YOU?

There really wasn’t any conscious intention on my part to create an eyewear line when I started making h0les. To be honest, the whole thing really started as a random experiment… or a happy accident, perhaps. If anything, I feel like more of an alchemist than a designer, combining familiar elements to create something unfamiliar.

THE GLASSES ARE SUCH STATEMEMENT PIECES, SUPER COLORFUL TOO. NAME AN IMAGE/MEMORY/FILM OR WHATEVER THAT HELPED CREATE YOUR VISION?

For the brand I think I ended up borrowing aesthetic elements from sci-fi– a clean, minimal atmosphere with a little mystery, probably in reaction to how maximal and colorful the pieces themselves are. It’s like a rave sponsored by Apple.

I LOVE THAT. OKAY, BUT THE SUNNIES AREN’T THE MOST PRACTICAL FOR SEEING (I THINK I TRIPPED, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.) DO YOU LIVE BY THE WHOLE “I SUFFER FOR FASHION” MOTTO?

Some people find practicality to be insufferable… and those are probably the people who love h0les. But I also do hope no one is truly suffering because of them, ha.

LADY GAGA LOVES Y’ALL. HOW’D THAT HAPPEN?

Facebook, believe it or not. I think it’s easy to have a slightly tortured relationship with social media but if you can move past that it’s quite incredible the ways people are connecting.

WHAT OTHER BIG NAMES DO YOU HEART SEE ROCKING HOLES?

Lana Wachowski… and Dennis Rodman? It sounds cheesy, but honestly I love seeing anyone wear them. My favorite is watching people’s reactions when they put them on for the first time

OKAY, LET’S BE REAL. IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S SOME OTHER BRANDS “INSPIRED BY” /KNOCKING OFF YOUR LINE… THOUGHTS?

I think you hit the nail on the head with inspired by vs. knocking off. There’s definitely a fine line between the two, I’ll say that much. My friends actually think I’m too nice/passive about it, but I’m very active in choosing not to spend my energy on things I can’t control. At the end of the day I’ve got so many ideas so I just keep evolving, and if they want to keep copying… they’d better keep up!

YAS GIRL. DO YOU DO THE “MOOD BOARDS” THING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? I’D DIE TO KNOW WHAT’S ON IT. I DUNNO WHY BUT I IMAGINES LIKE MY LITTLE PONY AND MDMA PILLS AND CLUB KIDS AND SPICE GIRLS POSTERS.

I’ve never made a mood board in my life. The most I’ll do is save an image here and there. And then forget where I saved them. There’s all these little folders of weird images hidden on my computer… like easter eggs. I’m sure there’s got to be a Spice Girl somewhere in the mix though.

I’M OBSSESSED WITH THE GOGGLES. HOW DO YOU TOP THAT GREATNESS THOUGH? HOW DO YOU PLAN TO TAKE TO ANOTHER AMAZING LEVEL?

Thank you! Leveling up happens naturally. I’m really trying to just be present with the swirl that’s happening around this particular project right now. That’s one of the ways I show gratitude, by not moving on so quickly to the next thing. Although, to be honest, sitting still has never been my strong suit… 😉
