SHK: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SHOPPING AT OLD HOLLYWOOD? WHAT DRAWS YOU IN INTO THEIR SELECTION? HOW DID YOU DISCOVER THEM?

LAUREN GOULD: I’ve been shopping at Old Hollywood for about two years now. It was during a bike ride through Greenpoint that Old Hollywood first caught my eye, and I’ve been returning ever since. Their jewelry and clothing is really up my alley: a modern take on a boho-vintage vibe. I love that they have a mix of local designers alongside bigger brands, which means there’s always so much to discover at a wide range of price points. Honestly, it’s dangerous, because no matter what your budget is, you can always find something to take home.

SO HOW DID YOU WIND UP IN THIS CRAZY FASHION WORLD?

I was first introduced to the world of fashion as an undergrad student at NYU, where I took part in an eclectic assortment of internships that could have only ever happened in NYC. My first such internship was as an assistant to the fashion writer Karen Robinovitz, followed by stints at companies like YSL, Gucci and Harrison and Shriftman.

When I finally graduated, I wound up working at a celebrity magazine for a few months, spent a few years in fashion public relations, and then took on a freelance gig as a fashion editor at Rizzoli. Alongside blogging, I’m also currently design director of the Brooklyn-based creative agency, HOWL Group, where I work with a variety of fashion and lifestyle clients.

Looking back, I definitely think that having a chance to view the industry from so many angles has given me a truly unique perspective. If there’s anything I’ve learned in all my years, it’s that fashion has the inspiring ability to break through so many barriers: whether linguistic, cultural or geographic. For me, fashion is a form of art; it provides a canvas for us to communicate with the world.

THAT’S AWESOME. WHY SHOULD WE FOLLOW THE MARCY STOP?

I think people are drawn to The Marcy Stop because they’re inspired by my style: a combination of new & vintage, high & low, and street vs. chic. For me, fashion is never about wearing only luxury items or one label from head-to-toe. It’s about working with your wardrobe: mixing, matching and coming up with effortless, stylish looks that make you happy and confident, and as a bonus — don’t need to break the bank. I’m great at finding amazing shopping deals, and always keen to share with my readers how they can achieve the same look for less.

 WHAT’S YOUR LIFE MOTTO?

My new motto has recently become “Feel the fear, do it anyway.” And I think that’s really how I try to live my life. Trying something new is always scary, but it’s conquering that fear that leads to learning and deeper experience.
