Paris based illustrator and art director Rosemarie Auberson is best known for her expressive yet minimal landscape and floral collages. Mixing simple forms of pattern and organic imagery, she focuses on texture and color to create stunning images that create a delicately understated, yet dreamy aesthetic. She has collaborated with fashion designers such as Hermés, Givenchy and New York label Rachel Comey. Last year, she published her own book with a collection of collages. We spoke to her about her collaborations, inspirations and her love of traveling.

HOW DID YOU COME TO THIS CAREER? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

I started as a graphic designer and illustrator, studying in art direction. I always did some personal work for me, some research. It seems that people like this personal work so I tried to develop it.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS MADE COLLAGES OR DID YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT ARTISTIC BACKGROUND STARTING OUT?

Yes, I have always done collages, since I was in art school, so very young. I was inspired by some of Joseph Beuys collages I discovered at that time, Matisse and Hans Arp always and the Dada movement. I used newspapers and magazines with paintings.

CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE COLLABORATIONS YOU HAVE DONE WITH CLOTHING LINES?

I was very lucky that Rachel Comey discovered my work through my website and asked me to collage. I worked also for more specific commissions for others brands, especially for Hermès, as an illustrator for their catalogue.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FASHION DESIGNERS?

Phoebe PhiloChristophe LemaireMona Kowalska, Dries Van Noten (he has the most beautiful patterns and interesting mixes) among others!

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION IN TIMES OF NEED?

Books and magazines (vintage and new), I am a sort of addict to the printed matter, exhibitions and internet, of course.

WHO HAS INFLUENCED YOUR AESTHETIC AND STYLE AS AN ARTIST?

I don’t know who has influenced me directly but I always like painters with abstract works. I am also attracted to minimalistic shapes and colors.

YOU RECENTLY CAME OUT WITH A BOOK OF YOUR WORK, WHAT WAS THE PROCESS LIKE?

It was a catalogue with some old and new works. I really like the object of a book. Sometimes I prefer the books to the works, in particular with the photo exhibitions, I always prefer the books. I was preparing an exhibition for Ofr at the same time, so I was creating something I put directly in the catalogue. Maybe this influenced the kind of work I was doing at that time, something that fit in the book.

WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE LIVING ARTIST?

Impossible, I can’t choose one! But if I had to, here are some artists I like more specifically: Suzan Frecon, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Tuttle, Camille Henrot, Landon Metz, Jonathan Binet.

NAME SOMETHING YOU LOVE, AND WHY.

Today, right now is travel! I don’t travel enough and I think and it is one of the best inspiration sources! It can be a great way to enlarge our vision and be more creative.
