The fashion bloggers behind ÉS.CAPE translate New York style into a way of life.

Saxon Campbell and Cara Jimenez have been long time friends and are now a duo of New York street style pioneers. Going far beyond impeccable outfits, their blog, ÉS.CAPE, delves into all things stylish: music, novels, indie brands, and must-have products for both men and women. Strong, narrative photography helps make this blog even more captivating than it’s already engaging content. Cinematic looks and rustic NYC backgrounds make their self-styled ensembles truly come alive. I sat down with both Saxon and Cara to pick their brains about what goes on behind the scenes at ÉS.CAPE.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELVES. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN FASHION AND START WORKING TOGETHER?

Cara: Growing in NYC has definitely influenced my sense of style as well admiring the fashion world. I just simply love and appreciate clothes with the different silhouettes, fabrics and patterns, so  I knew I wanted to be part of that world. I attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and I’m currently studying Advertising and Marketing Communications with a minor in French. Last fall like around November 2013,  I had an idea about creating a blog featuring a man and woman duo. I love my school and what it has to offer, but I was in weird rut and just felt creatively bored. I pitched the idea to Saxon and so slowly but surely ÉS.CAPE was born.

Saxon: Being from Oklahoma, I grew up seeing a lot that I loved that wasn’t existent where I was. So after college, I headed to NYC to start my career as a graphic designer/photographer. My first job was in fashion, so that stuck with me ever since then. I really liked the idea and I thought it had great potential to grow in something incredible. With school and work, we decided hold it off and start working and creating our blog after the New Years.

HOW HAVE BOTH OF YOUR BACKGROUNDS BENEFITTED THIS PROJECT? WHAT’S ONE UNIQUE THING EACH OF YOU BRINGS TO THE BLOG?

Cara: Well, our motivation and perseverance in our work ethics from either our job or school has definitely helped create an incredible blog featuring a dose of our styles and photography. One unique thing would be our strong eye for fashion and photography in creating strong, yet fun content for the world to see and enjoy.

Saxon: This is our baby so we put 110% in everything we do to help it grow and create a distinctive voice in the fashion blog world.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE BLOG’S NAME?

Saxon: We liked the ideology of escapism and this is our creative escape. We played around with that concept and I came up with the logo and wording as ÉS.CAPE as the pronunciation from Cara as ÉS.CAPE [es-cah-paeh]

Cara: I was thinking about the word in Spanish ‘Escapar’ and I liked the way it sounded so I mixed it in a way. Just giving a little personality.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM FOR EACH NEW SHOOT? WHO DOES THE STYLING?

Cara: As for the most part, I do the styling for the shoot. However, we do everything as partners and work very well off of each other and collaborate in regards to the theme or inspiration. I gain inspiration from everything and anything. From films to even a phrase, I imagine a story behind the inspiration and work from there.

HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH THE LOCATIONS FOR EACH SHOOT? IT SEEMS LIKE EACH LOCATION IS PERFECTLY MATCHED TO THE CLOTHING YOU’VE CHOSEN.

Saxon: Thank you! Yes, location is very important. Living in such a vast and diverse city, New York offers so many distinctive locations for us to play and take advantage. We enjoy trying new places and see how it will fit with our shoots.

DO YOU CURRENTLY WORK WITH ANY DESIGNERS OR OTHER INDUSTRY PEOPLE? HAVE YOU DONE OR ARE YOU DOING ANY COOL COLLABORATIONS?

Saxon: Working with up-in-coming brands such as P&Co and LEEAM has definitely had it perks. We enjoy collaborating and sharing ideas with others and establishing a nurturing relationship with these brands.  It’s very rewarding with these fun projects

WHAT’S BEEN EACH OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT SO FAR?

Cara: To be honest, we truly love every shoot.  We feel it just gets better and better each time spending time with each other and creating something incredible. ÉS.CAPE is our baby and we really can’t pick a favorite shoot; each shoot had a sweet memory behind the story and the creativity in creating this shoots. We enjoy it every bit.

WHAT’S BEEN ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FOR YOU IN DEVELOPING THIS BLOG? WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING?

Cara: As a new blog, it’s definitely a lot of work but it’s so worth it. With just Saxon and I as well as the our photographer friends’ such as Hannah Miles and Fan Chen, we are definitely getting the a good feeling about running things especially creating an organized schedule to keep things consistent and producing incredible content in order for ÉS.CAPE to grow and develop its authentic voice. I enjoy every bit of the whole process in from the initial inspiration to the final product and uploading the post on the blog. And what’s the most rewarding part is working along side my great friend, Saxon, which couldn’t get any better.
