For an issue of SHK Mag, we photographed a very geometrically coordinated shoot, by Stephanie Selisker, amongst The Bushwick Art Collective.

Bushwick is not as scary as it used to be… With what seems like the steady gentrification of the various neighborhoods conveniently located off of the L train, bid farewell to desolation (who are those weird old woman digging through someone else’s garbage, and why are they putting their lucky finds into a strange minivan…?) and say hello to the cool little warehouses turned into art galleries, i.e. The Bushwick Art Collective. Located between Troutman Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue off the Jefferson L train stop, the Bushwick Art Collective is an outdoor gallery specifically designated for street artists to do their thang. On one wall, the head of a horse sits exposed revealing the bright pink colors of its muscles and the cold, white nature of its vertebrae. On another, there’s an illustration by street artist Buff Monster, where dancing ice cream cones all look like little modern versions of the cyclops monster. And artists worldwide have flocked to Bushwick Art Collective just to paint on its sacred walls, like Phlegm from London, Reka from Australia, Olek from Poland and Pixel Pancho from Italy. Fortunately, though, the Bushwick Art Collective has arrived at the right time by serving savior to the 5Pointz, a popular hubbub for street artist in Queens, which was recently whitewashed and turned into luxury condos in November 2013. So no longer do street artists need to feel threatened about not finding space for their craft in NYC, because there’s the Bushwick Art Collective, a continuation of that special art form — street art and graffiti — which unites community without the pretentiousness of the formal art world (and hopefully acts as inspiration for future locations).
