The heart can heal.

ERIN-telford-meditation

I have allowed myself to be absorbed in my own mind for quite a while. Battles with panic attacks, periods of depression. I felt the depth of the people around me and the depth within myself before I knew much about anything else. I began to have weird physical ailments move swiftly in and out of my life, exacerbating my mental flows (which seem to be never at rest). I watch the people around me and sometimes I felt flawed. Most recently a rapid heartbeat has shook up my life a bit. Interrupting my sleep, any sort of rest I yearned for, even disturbing the writing of a sentence. This is when I began to carve a fresh start. I walked into the doors at Radiant Heart… Erin greeted me with a soft voice. She was really like a blanket. No judgments. Just hope. Erin has helped me try to connect to the “other” side of me. The resting one, the one at peace. I have never tried acupuncture or Reiki. In short, she reassured me that this bad stuff won’t last forever. Here, I welcome you to learn about Erin: a alchemist, catalyst, facilitator, witness, healer, secret keeper and your personal cheer squad. If you want to become the best you, there is no better start.

CAN YOU FIRST JUST EXPLAIN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT ACUPUNCTURE & REIKI IS?

Erin Telford: Acupuncture and Reiki are both Eastern healing techniques. They both work with the energy in the body to repair and heal on a deep level. Acupuncture evolved as a practice over the last couple thousand years. It involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body to move stuck energy, strengthen what is weak, and drain where there is excess. Each acupuncture point that is used has a physical, emotional and spiritual function whether I am treating you for a migraine or for difficulty falling asleep.

Reiki is a natural healing system founded by Mikao Usui a little over a hundred years ago. He “received” the Reiki through a healing event where it came through his body. Practitioners are initiated by a master who opens the channels in them so that this Universal life force energy is able to pass through their hands. Reiki energy goes where it is needed, balances the body’s energy centers, relieves pain, and calms the nervous system.

Both modalities can be used for deep rejuvenation of the body, emotional support, pain relief, and even more serious illness.

WHAT MADE YOU TAKE THIS PATH AS A CAREER? WAS THERE A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT SHAPED THE PATH?

I originally moved to New York ten years ago to work in the fashion industry. I was really fortunate and got what I thought at the time was a great job. I felt like I had made it, but in reality I was miserable – exhausted, burnt out, and worked to the bone. I had my first and only panic attack and realized that how I was living was crazy and unsustainable. Hurricane Katrina had also happened around that time and I was really having a hard time feeling like I wasn’t contributing anything meaningful to the world. It was kind of a perfect storm that helped me see that I needed to make some big changes. Once I made that decision, it took about another six months of soul searching and waiting for a sign before I got my lightning bolt. I grabbed a magazine from the PR department one day to read on my subway ride home. There was an article in it called Death by Stress. It was about the typical New York girl who is falling apart at the seams from working and playing too hard. I was like, “that’s me!!” In the article, she went to go get acupuncture and felt a million times better.   I was totally intrigued and sent away for a course catalog from the acupuncture school that was mentioned. As I flipped through the pages describing the classes that were offered, I started to feel a level of inspiration that I hadn’t felt for forever. The choice was crystal clear. It was a done deal. I quit my job, went back to school and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life

HOW DO YOUR PRACTICES HELP PHYSICAL PAIN?

On a really basic level, our bodies operate in two ways – fight or flight or rest and digest. Anytime a person is relaxed, the body can begin to heal itself. Acupuncture helps to turn off the fight or flight response, calm areas of the brain that are associated with pain, reduce inflammation and stimulate endorphins. The body responds to the needles in local areas of pain as micro trauma and immediately floods the area with oxygen and fresh blood circulation to stimulate healing.

There is a saying in Chinese that translates to: If there is free flow, there is no pain. If there is pain, there is no free flow. Pain is like an energy traffic jam in the body. Once you get someone’s energy unstuck and moving, pain ceases to be a problem.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MEDICINE AND SCIENCE IN CONJUNCTION WITH YOUR PRACTICES?

Absolutely! Western medicine is excellent for emergencies, certain drugs for certain things and when you need to pull out the big guns. Eastern medicine shines in the area of detecting and preventing dis-ease before it even begins and treating the emotional/spirit body. I would say that both of them are medical and scientific in their own way… with a little bit of magic sprinkled in. Anytime healing is happening whether it’s in a hospital or on a mountaintop, there are higher forces at work.

OUT OF ALL THE PEOPLE YOU SEE, DO YOU SEE A LOT OF SIMILARITIES? IS THERE SOMETHING PARTICULAR YOU SEE PEOPLE COME IN FOR MORE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS?

Almost everyone I see has either stress, anxiety or depression on the list of things that they want to work on. I feel that stress is an umbrella for a big group of emotions. We’ve just accepted that we will all be stressed as a culture without examining what that means for us. One person’s stress can be fear and insecurity. Another’s can be anger, disappointment and dissatisfaction. I work with emotional conditions more than anything so we get underneath what’s really going on with stress and anxiety.

DO YOU THINK LIVING IN NYC CONTRIBUTES TO PEOPLE’S MENTAL & PHYSICAL STATE? LOTS OF PEOPLE SAY IT’S HARD TO LIVE HERE.

New York is definitely a special needs city. We are strivers, dreamers and creatives. The spirit here is so vibrant but it can go into overdrive because of all of the overstimulation. We are bombarded with noise, light and air pollution. New Yorkers work very long hours, push themselves too hard and don’t get enough sleep or exercise. Health isn’t built into the culture here so it takes a toll. I find that the time relaxing on my table is the only 30 minutes of a person’s week where they are lying down with no electronic device. We really need the deep restoration that energy work can provide to balance out the nuttiness of the city. Regular healing work can also give a person a deeper awareness of their habits and support for making healthy lifestyle changes.

Between acupuncture, herbs, Reiki and Breathwork – I can help anything from back pain to recovering from a breakup to helping you get pregnant.

Why you would choose acupuncture:

If you are looking for therapeutic conversation, coaching and health care advice.

If you are going through a life transition-a loss, breakup, job change, relationship change, life makeover, or wanting to change your life path.

If you are working with depression, anxiety, fear, self-doubt or lack of self-esteem or confidence, or feeling paralyzed by your emotions.

If you want to work on something specific and local in the body – examples would be insomnia, eating disorders, menstrual cramps, headaches, digestive issues, pain anywhere in the body, allergies, fertility issues, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, fatigue, etc.

If you are sick or feel like you are getting sick.

Why you would choose Reiki:

If you would like a gentle, light touch healing method that will soothe your nervous system, help to balance your energy centers, quiet the mind, and give you the experience of being safely witnessed by having me in the room with you.

Reiki energy goes wherever it is needed and works to return your cells to their original condition-can be perfect for more serious illness like cancer or neurological disorders, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia as well as just great relaxation and deep rejuvenation

Why you would choose Breathwork:

If you feel like you are ready for some emotional release that is gently facilitated.

If you feel stuck in your life, your thought patterns, or limiting beliefs about what life can be like.

If you feel difficulty in opening your heart or receiving love.

If you would like to release strong emotions like grief or anger.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE CREATES A HEALTHY MIND & SOUL?

Self-acceptance and self-compassion. Knowing yourself and your needs. Some kind of spiritual practice. Spending time in nature. Making conscious choices about how you want to live your life. Creative expression. Loving and being loved. Moving your body. Finding time to just be still.

ARE THERE THINGS OUTSIDE OF YOUR OFFICE PEOPLE CAN DO TO IMPROVE THEIR LIFESTYLES?

Definitely. You really are your own healer. The decisions you make about how you live your life can affect you on all levels. Just for starters, I recommend that people cut their toxic load by eating clean, local, organic foods, get eight hours of sleep, find exercise that they like and can do 2-3x/week, be conscious of what they are consuming in terms of media and technology, find some time each day to breathe for at least five minutes and center themselves, think of three things they are grateful for every day, and make conscious choices about who they spend time with in relationship. Those are just some basics that can make a huge difference in your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health.
